Alright, my box is going to have a single port tuned real low for music, and a second, removable port of the same length (port goes straight out of box, no loss or gain in box volume) for SPL. I checked and it's legal to do this. I know it's not the right way to tune to get the most SPL, but would a pretty safe bet for SPL tuning be about 45 Hz? It won't be the best, but it SHOULD be more than 30-33 Hz, correct? I just want a higher tuning so I can compete and have fun while staying very musical. Any thoughts on where to tune for SPL?

ive heard of people even tuning all the way up to 55hz. ive never heard a box tuned that high though so i can really give you an honest opinion. the 32ish hz area is more for daily listening. my box is tuned to right around 32hz and sounds pretty good for the most part.

The frequency you tune to for SPL is dependent on the vehicles resonant frequency. All vehicles are different, and there is a way to find this frequency. Unfortunately, I don't know exactly how it's done.
A quick search will bring you some information. |

Midwest SPL, it's really the only organization that has more than 2 shows within an hour drive of me lol. I've heard good things from other competitors in it.

id guess 45 would be good. normally higher tuning like 55 and 60 are better for sealed up where 45ish is better for if you can open a window or door. you may want to ask on the midwest spl forum if they have one thou I've never competed in it. finding the resonate freq of the vehicle helps alot thou

I definitely plan on doing the resonante frequency next summer, but I have 2 comps left this year for my little DC 10 and I just wanted something good enough to finish the summer having fun and get some numbers from this sub. I was already leaning towards 45 Hz, it seems like a good middle ground, there is probably a little left to gain, but I don't have to worry about going too high with tuning either. Thanks for the help! One other question, is there a recommended ratio for port area to box size in SPL, or is bigger always better when just burping a sub?

The vehicle is a definite factor in what freq to burp. I would talk to a few competitors at those shows u attend. They can throw u a few tips! Also adding power can't hurt! Na bigger ain't better, not all about how much cone area you have! I have beat 6 Jl 13w7 with a pair of RF 12" TRF. Best way to get louder is to use a mic and test, test, and did i say test? Your port change will be fine. Good luck with it. Let us know how it turns out!
